Why I do what I do...
It was my first night in Paris. I had just sat on the tarmac at JFK for 8 hours followed by a 7-hour flight. I was completely in denial about my jet leg — because after years of waiting, I was finally in Paris, and we were going out…so we went out. We went bar hopping, in the rain, around Pigalle, and stumbled in to this bar right before closing and were graciously afforded a last call — so we indulged.
The bartender’s friends were also there and I don’t know who made the first move, but someone realized the other group was talking about music, and I guess that served as an open invitation because the next thing you know, the world opened up and two groups were one. We began sharing songs, artists, and DJs from our own cultures and delighting in crazy overlaps neither of us knew existed for hours.
It was then that I paused — amidst the smoke, French rap, and warm orange lights — and saw what I always knew to be true but FELT for the first time in a raw way: music is truly the fabric that connects us all. It is a language, and community, of love and acceptance that allows us to accept and love people as humans — just for being them and nothing else. It’s the common denominator that immediately breeds trust between strangers.
Music is this thing that takes full control of your body — like when that bass hits and you didn’t know that you could move like that but it’s happening, and it feels soooo good, natural, and freeing.
Music is when you thought you were the only one who heard that transition but then the girl next to you clearly felt the same thing and it’s basically love and first sight.
Music is my phone being inundated with text messages on a Thursday night because Kaskade just announced NYC Redux tickets will be on sale the next morning at 10am.
Music is 8 people sitting in a room in pure silence just listening to the intricacies of this new set someone discovered with smiles plastered on their faces.
Music is that moment when you're standing around and dancing with your friends, none of whom you knew just last year, completely sober, just happy to hear this DJ who could only be here on a Wednesday.
Music is that thing that gives you the power to smile warmly at a stranger having a bad day and tell them something positive.
Music is community. Music is love.
At the end of the day, people want to love just as much as they want to be loved and music, our community, affords people the power to do both.
I am a producer. I create experiences. All of this that comes with “music” are the only experiences I want to create. All I want to do is build spaces for people to fall in love and be in love with music. I want to give more people more opportunities to be a part of and build our community and impact the world with their own brand of positivity.
